Both for dinner and as a side dish, salads are one of the most common recipes in the diet of Spanish families. This food has a very low energy value because only contains about 17 kilocalories per 100 grams, according to the Spanish Nutrition Foundation (FEN). This is because more than 95% of its composition is made up of water and, therefore, it can be more interesting to make salads with spinach.

However, many consumers also choose lettuce because they prefer both its taste and texture. The most important thing when choosing a lettuce is opt for those that have a greener colorThis means they have more nutrients. This is why iceberg lettuce is considered the least nutritious and experts recommend romaine the most.

Preserving any of these lettuces is not difficult: we simply place them in the fridge where they last for several days. However, it is usual that before consuming them we remove several layers of leaves that have become soft or even their edges have turned black. In this aspect, we can improve its conservation using some tricks. In this way, we will have fresh and crisp lettuce for more days.

One of the most important aspects when storing lettuce is the degree of humidity to which it is exposed. It is possible that when buying lettuce you have noticed that small reddish spots appear on its whiter parts. They are caused by rust and are due to distributors keeping them at a higher humidity level than necessary. Of course, these small marks are completely harmless.

Although growers often overdo it, we tend to fall short when we bring them home. This is the reason why lettuce leaves turn soft before their time and their edges turn black; that is, they are withering. In this state, the lettuces are more prone to the invasion of microorganisms to spoil them. Maintaining your hydration is therefore a key aspect.

According to Consumer, the Eroski supermarket food blog, one of the best ways to keep lettuce moist is wrap them with moistened paper and refrigerate them in this way. This method “allows excess water to be absorbed without the leaves becoming dehydrated.” Also, it is best to wash the leaves when they are going to be consumed and not before storing the lettuce.

The perfect space inside the fridge to keep the lettuce is the drawers that are usually on the lower shelves. This is the most convenient area for lettuce to stay in good condition because it is one of the least cold of this appliance. Lettuce is a good source of vitamin C – one serving provides 15% of the recommended daily amount of this nutrient – ​​and folate.
