Winter returns by surprise to Spain: cold up to -10ºC, rain and snow from 500 meters

A mass of cold air and a ‘retrograde’ storm from Europe will cause a winter storm at the gates of spring.

The week that has just begun will have two clearly differentiated weather situationswith a first half marked by stable and sunny weather that will be truncated on Thursday with a weather change that will return winter to the Peninsula, just on the eve of spring, according to information from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

The AEMET spokesman, Rubén del Campo, explained that as of Thursday there will be a significant drop in temperatures that will recover “mid-winter values” and with snowfall at low levels.

Until then, between Monday and Wednesday the anticyclone whose center is located between the Peninsula and the British Isles will predominatewhich prevents storms from approaching and guarantees slightly cloudy skies in general and the absence of precipitation.

However, the anticyclone sends North winds that are accumulating clouds in the Pyrenees and the Bay of Biscay, areas where some drizzles and light rains are expected in general, and more likely in the Basque Country and northern Navarra. The snowfall “will not be very heavy” but will appear in the Pyrenees from 1,000 to 1,300 meters and the level will fall to 700 meters at the end of Wednesday.

Del Campo adds that “Probable” showers are also expected on Wednesday on the coasts of Catalonia and the Valencian Community as well as in the Balearic Islandsas a consequence of an increase in instability in that area.

In this first half of the week, strong gusty winds will also blow in the northeast of the peninsula, even with very strong gusts of more than 80 kilometers per hour, in the Lower Ebro, near the mouth, and in the interior of the Pyreneeswhere north winds and north winds are expected.

“They will be intense”, highlights the spokesman who adds that this wind will cause bad state of the sea in the north of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands where waves of up to 4 meters are expected. Likewise, it also warns of a strong easterly wind in the Strait.

Regarding the temperatures of these first three days, he indicates that in general terms they will be the ones for the season “or a little higher in points of the north, during the day.” During the day they will rise “notably” in the northern half and will go down through the Mediterranean.

However, on Tuesday and Wednesday there will be slight decreases in the north and in the rest they will remain unchanged. On the contrary, he has pointed out that the night ones will rise on Tuesday and Wednesday and the frosts will be “less frequent and intense” than on Monday, when -10 degrees Celsius have been reached in Baqueira; or -5ºC in points in the east of Castilla y León, such as Almazán (Soria) or Molina de Aragón (Guadalajara).

The maximum will be between 18 and 20ºC in the central zone; will reach 20 or 22ºC in the south of Galiciapeninsular southwest and interior of the Mediterranean regions and will remain between 15 and 18ºC in the rest of the northern half.

spring with winter time

The AEMET spokesman has warned that “important changes” will arrive on Thursday, with a mass of very cold air, coming from the European continent, which will begin to invade the Peninsula, also accompanied by a storm with retrograde movementwhich means that the displacement movement of the storm “will not be the most common”, but will travel from northern Europe to Spain.

“Namely, will move in a southwesterly direction when storms usually follow a route that takes them from the west, that is, from the Atlantic to the east, that is, towards the interior of the European continent”, he details.

The problem is precisely that these retrograde storms have “a little more difficulty when it comes to predicting their exact position and thereforethe uncertainty associated with your forecast is higher than usual“.

In any case, Del Campo reports that what “is quite likely” that temperatures will drop “significantly” on Thursday first on Thursday in the peninsular southeast, Mediterranean area and Balearic Islands and that it would continue during Friday in most of the Peninsula, especially in the northern half.

Thus, he explains that during Friday and Saturday the thermometers during the day will be, in general, between 5 and 10ºC below normal for the time. In fact, on Saturday, when spring begins, temperatures will be “fully winter” and even up to 15ºC below normal in the northern half.

The recovery will begin on Sunday but the “very cold” environment will continue with “frequent” night frosts since Thursday, which on Friday they will affect “especially” the east of Castilla y León, the northeast of Castilla-La Mancha and the south of Aragónas well as to mountain areas.

Del Campo adds that on Saturday and Sunday the frosts will be widespread and will already affect a good part of the interior, also reaching a certain intensity for the time of year.

We will drop below -2ºC on the southern plateau; -5ºC in the northern plateau and central moors and -10ºC in mountain areas. We are talking about night temperatures between five and ten degrees below normal for the time of year, ”he indicates.

In addition, “to all this cold environment” must be added, according to the spokesman, the wind that will blow with intensity in mountain areas, the Ebro Valley and other points in the northeast of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands. will be cold, strong winds from the north and northeast, which will increase in this winter sensation.

At the same time precipitation will occur and taking into account the uncertainty that exists today, it will be more likely on Thursday in the northern third, Mediterranean regions of the Peninsula and in the Balearic Islands with snow from 600 meters in the north of the peninsula.

On Friday the rainfall will be in the form of showers and will affect the northern third of the Peninsula, the northern plateau, around the Central and Iberian systems and other areas of the peninsular southeast and they will be snowy in many of these areas, since the level will be very low as a result of the thermal collapse.

On Friday we will probably talk about a lower level of five hundred meters in large areas of the country. On Saturday and Sunday the precipitation will continue with snow at low levels in approximately more areas than we have mentioned for Friday, although with less intensity and with a progressive recovery of the weather towards stability as of Sunday”, he assessed.

Regarding the Canary Islands, the archipelago will remain “outside” the situation, with a mild atmosphere and some clouds with possible drizzle in the north of the most mountainous islands throughout the week.
